Discovery Channel and Discovery Kids win Seven Daytime Emmy Nominations
Discovery Channel and Discovery Kids nabbed a combined total of seven nominations, as the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced the contenders for the 36th Annual Daytime Entertainment Emmy Awards on May 14, 2009.
Ben Bailey, host of Discovery Channel’s popular game show CASH CAB, was nominated for Outstanding Game Show Host for the second year in a row. The series, which won last year for Outstanding Game/Audience Participation Show, was also nominated for the third time in this category. CASH CAB is the game show where host Ben Bailey gets behind the wheel of a New York City taxi to quiz contestants on immersive, general knowledge questions all the way to their destination. As the meter ticks, the questions get harder and the stakes get higher. Miss three questions, and Ben pulls the CASH CAB over and ejects the contestants onto the sidewalk, no matter where they are.
Last year’s youngest-ever Emmy winner for Outstanding Performer in a Children’s Series, Bindi Irwin, was again nominated in this category as host of Discovery Kids’ BINDI THE JUNGLE GIRL. In its second season, BINDI THE JUNGLE GIRL brings viewers into the wonderful world of wildlife from Bindi’s cozy tree house set high up in the rainforest. While interacting with a wide variety of animals, Bindi highlights conservation and explains how all creatures are worthy of our respect and protection. The series also features “Bindi’s Blog,” where she shares her unusual life as an 8-year-old with kids around the world and answers some of their most frequently asked questions.
Additional Discovery Kids’ nominations included ADVENTURE CAMP for Outstanding Children’s Series and The Future is Wild with three nominations for Outstanding Directing in an Animated Program, Outstanding Writing in Animation, and Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing – Live Action and Animation.
In ADVENTURE CAMP, four kids from the U.S. and four from the U.K. leave their family and friends behind to join together at Busch Gardens and Sea World in Orlando, Florida, for a challenging animal experience at Adventure Camp, using their wits to complete daily tasks and make lasting friendships. In the animated series, THE FUTURE IS WILD, three adventurous kids are propelled into the future to solve the mysteries behind Earth’s evolution while trying to survive extreme climates and hungry creatures.
Launched in 1996, Discovery Kids has won multiple Daytime Emmys and Parents’ Choice Awards for its series and specials. In late 2010, Discovery Communications and Hasbro, Inc., will debut a new brand on the current Discovery Kids channel, dedicated to high-quality children’s and family entertainment and educational programming built around some of the most well-known and beloved brands in the world.
The Daytime Emmys will take place on Sunday, August 30, 2009, from the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
