Bild.de ranked Germany’s Most Popular Online Newspaper

comScore, Inc. , a leader in measuring the digital world, has released a study of the habits of online newspaper readers in Germany, based on data from the comScore World Metrix audience measurement service. 12.9 million German Internet users viewed a total of 611 million pages of online newspaper content in April 2009, averaging 47 pages per person.

Germany’s 12.9 million online newspaper readers spent a combined total of 4.9 million hours reading content on online newspaper sites in April. The most popular property was Bild.de with 4.7 million visitors, followed by Welt.de (3 million visitors), Sueddeutsche.de (2.3 million visitors) and Faz.net (1.1 million visitors).

“With 13 million monthly readers, online newspapers currently attract one-third of the total German Internet audience,” said Andrew Livesey, comScore director of business development for Germany. “However, newspapers are only capturing an average of 27 minutes of each of their visitor’s time spent online in a month. As newspapers increasingly incorporate emerging digital media, including audience commenting, social networking and video into the online news experience, traditional German newspapers have the potential to increase the engagement of their online readers. Such innovations will represent significant benefit for readers and advertisers alike.”

Interestingly, Turkish news site Milliyet.com.tr ranked as the ninth most visited newspaper site in Germany, attracting 390,000 visitors who spent a total of 133,000 hours on Milliyet sites during the month. However, the Turkish-owned, Turkish-language publication, attracted 10.3 million worldwide visitors, of which approximately only 4 percent came from within Germany.

Heavy German online newspaper readers (the top 20 percent of online newspaper readers based on time spent in the site category) viewed an average of 201 pages, and made an average of 20 visits per visitor to the category in April.

Welt.de attracted 33 percent (1.5 million visitors) of its total worldwide audience of 4.5 million people from outside of Germany. 11.5 million German mobile subscribers browsed or downloaded content from a news or information site via their mobile phone. A total of 6.3 million videos were viewed on Bild.de during the month, an average of 4.5 videos per viewer.
