BBC1's Ben Miller drama Death in Paradise returned to BBC1 with nearly 7 million viewers on Tuesday, a million up on its first series launch.

The fish out of water police drama, starring Miller as a UK cop in the Caribbean, was watched by 6.9 million viewers, a 28.8% share of the audience, between 9pm and 10pm.

Death in Paradise began its first series on 25 October 2011 with 5.75 million viewers, a 23.7% share.

Death in Paradise may have been assisted in its inquiries by going up against ITV1 documentary All You Can Eat, about supersized meals, which could only consume 1.8 million viewers (7.5%), also between 9pm and 10pm.

There was tougher competition elsewhere with the return of Channel 4 dating show, The Undateables, which had 2.6 million viewers (10.8%) for its second date.

Tuesday night also saw the return of BBC2's Stargazing Live, hosted by Professor Brian Cox and Dara O Briain, which shone with 3.1 million viewers (12.9%) including 417,000 on BBC HD, between 8pm and 9pm.

Stargazing Live beat the first in the sixth series of Channel 4's Supersize v Superskinny, which had 1.8 million viewers (7.6%) between 8pm and 9pm.

BBC2's spin-off show, Stargazing Live: Back to Earth, fared less well, with 2.1 million viewers (8.9%) between 9pm and 9.30pm, including 239,000 on BBC HD.

It was followed by the second of BBC2's three-part Polar Bear Family and Me, watched by 2.3 million viewers (10.7%) including 155,000 on BBC HD between 9.30pm and 10.30pm.

Channel 4 documentary Don't Blame Facebook, about people who have blundered on social media, had 1.3 million viewers (7.3%) between 10pm and 11.05pm.

The Channel 4 show lost out to Channel 5's Celebrity Big Brother, which had 2 million viewers (11.2%) between 10pm and 11pm, with 700,000 (7%) for Celebrity Big Brother's Bit on the Side which followed between 11pm and midnight.
