World Service announces winners of 2010 African Performance award

Professor Wole Soyinka has announced that Will Smith Look-alike, written by Deborah Asiimwe of Uganda, is the winner of the annual BBC World Service African Performance playwriting competition.

BBC World Service first began airing African drama 50 years ago, in 1960. In 1971, BBC World Service for Africa launched a playwriting competition, now known as African Performance, and invited its listeners to compose a 30-minute English-language play containing no more than six characters.

The winning entries are recorded and broadcast on BBC World Service for Africa.

That first competition in 1971 was judged by the Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, and, by way of celebrating the 50th anniversary of the BBC African Performance season, he returned to judge this year’s competition.

The Nigerian writer, poet and playwright said of Deborah Asiimwe’s winning entry: “I thought the writing was very good and I became really caught up with the play wondering what the final denouement would be. It was convincing”.

Will Smith Look-Alike tells the story of 17-year-old Tereka as he travels to New York with his school music group after they won a national competition.

Once in New York, Tereka believes that his resemblance to the American actor Will Smith will help him to pursue a better life in the USA.

The other winning entries selected by Professor Soyinka, and which will air on BBC World Service for Africa later in the year, are:

Joint second place: Kitu Kidogo, by Atwine Bashir Kenneth of Uganda – a tale of two corrupt policemen who are struggling to make ends meet. They unknowingly prey on the Head of the Anti-Corruption Bureau and the story takes an unexpected twist.

Joint second place: The Coffin Factory, by last year’s winner, Julia Childs. This is a light-hearted play which deals with the stigma of HIV.

Third place: The Cow Needs A Wife, by Angella Emurwon of Uganda, is a slapstick comedy about a young man whose girlfriend discovers she is pregnant.

He needs to find a cow to give as a dowry to her grandmother and enlists the help of his rich uncle as his opportunistic sidekick.

Special Mention: Mandida’s Shoes, by Mike Mware, earned a special mention from our judge and will be produced as part of our drama season. The author is a Zimbabwean studying in South Africa.

Mandida is a young schoolgirl chosen to recite a poem in front of the Prime Minister at her school’s Jubilee celebrations. As events unfold she has other plans.

Drama producer, BBC African Performance, Jenny Horrocks, says: “Over the years, the competition has championed new writing talent across the continent, giving listeners an opportunity to provide different perspectives on a diverse range of contemporary issues.

“We’ve produced plays about prostitution, internet fraud, weddings, funerals and football, as well as comedy and science fiction.

“In celebrating the 50th year of BBC drama in Africa, it’s fantastic to look back at the list of creative, funny and hard-hitting dramas that reflect the wealth of creative talent across the continent.

“This year there were several strong entries sent in from Uganda and, unknowingly, Professor Soyinka picked three of them as prize winners. They should all feel very encouraged.”

NME.COM – the international music website – today celebrates its second award win in as many weeks after being named Consumer Website of the Year at last night’s Periodical Publishers Association (PPA) gala awards ceremony.

The PPA Awards recognise and reward editorial and publishing excellence, and celebrate the outstanding achievements of the best individuals, publications and brands in the magazine sector.

The IPC Inspire website claimed the top prize against fierce competition, and hot on the heels of their Association of Online Publishers (AOP) award win, which also saw them named Consumer Website of the Year.

Publishing director Paul Cheal says: “After being recognised last week as Consumer Website of the Year by the digital industry at the AOP Awards, to now win Consumer Website of the Year at the PPA Awards for the second year in succession really does demonstrate that NME.COM is best in class, not just in music media but in digital publishing per se. Once again this is a victory not just for site editor David Moynihan and his team, but also the wider NME editorial and marketing team, the Inspire Men and Music Digital and Commercial teams and of course IPC Digital. A true team success.”

Building on a solid foundation of quality journalism – round the clock reporting and expert opinion pieces – NME.com continues to be the first port of call for music fans.

The judges said: “A credible effective 360° approach, NME left no stone unturned.” They also praised the site for “demonstrating excellent commercial performance with strong growth and profitability.”

While a performance-boosting redesign for the site in the judging year focussed on increasing usability and a cleaner, more intuitive and inviting interface, an effective ‘daily videos’ box was added, as well as partnerships with a range of highly relevant music and ecommerce sites.

The annual award honors organizations in Boston “where employees exhibit a sense of pride, are willing to stretch beyond their perceived capabilities and are heavily invested in the well-being of the company.” This is the sixth year that Digitas has made the list. The agency was ranked 13th and was the only marketing communications agency to be honored.

“We strive to reward passion, individual contribution, talent and big ideas,” said Colin Kinsella, President, Digitas North America. “I’m pleased to say that we’re delivering on this and have built an environment of creativity and innovation with a team of energetic employees who embody success and commitment. We’re inspired by the uniqueness of our people and are honored by this recognition.”

The BBJ’s Best Places to Work was compiled through a survey conducted by Quantum Workplace. Employees of nominated companies were asked to complete an online survey. Categories included work environment, work-life balance, job satisfaction, advancement opportunities, management, compensation and benefits.

Organizations featured on the “Best” list exemplify nine essential ingredients: an authentic spirit of trust, the ability to take prudent risks, a can-do attitude that promotes pragmatic optimism, the capacity to manage the fundamentals, the courage to make, acknowledge and repair mistakes, a commitment to work with others, development of a diverse team, rewarding of successful projects and a safe work environment.

This announcement comes on the heels of Digitas Boston winning a number of new clients, including Aflac, Sears and Goodyear. Additionally, this honor is the most recent in a string of similar awards for Digitas. Offices in Chicago, Detroit, New York and Stamford have received similar honors from The Business Ledger in partnership with Best Companies to Work Group, Crain’s Chicago Business, Brill Street + Company, the National Association for Business Resources, Crain’s Detroit Business, Detroit Free Press, the Michigan Business and Professional Association, the New York State Society for Human Resource Management and the Best Companies Group.

This year marked the first time ADC has ever bestowed an ADC Black Cube, which was established for last year’s 88th Annual Awards but had no winner, and the first time in 12 years the club has recognized a best-in-show. “The Trillion Dollar Campaign” from TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris Johannesburg also won an ADC Gold Cube in advertising for print innovation, campaign, poster/billboard/outdoor.

The gala also saw presentation of the ADC 89th Annual Awards Agency, Network, Interactive Agency, Design Team and School of the Year honors, based upon most cumulative ADC Cubes won across all categories.

The winners were:ADC Agency of the Year: BBDO New York, New York, NY ,ADC Network of the Year: Y&R ,ADC Interactive Agency of the Year: Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, San Francisco, CA ,ADC Design Team of the Year: The New York Times Magazine, New York, NY and ADC School of the Year (tie): School of Visual Arts, New York, NY, and Miami Ad School.

Other top winners for the evening included Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, Wieden+Kennedy and The New York Times Magazine with two ADC Gold Cubes each. On the client side, NIKE “Livestrong Foundation” won two ADC Gold Cubes for work by W+K, as did Colgate for the “Comics” campaign by Prolam Y&R, Santiago, Chile, and “Take Them Out” from Miami Ad School Europe, Hamburg, Germany. ADC Cubes were awarded for work from 25 countries this year.

After years of hosting the awards presentation at the ADC Gallery, the club held the ADC 89th Annual Awards gala at the new SVA Theatre at the School of Visual Arts in New York. The recently refurbished, state-of-the-art venue was designed by world-renowned designer and ADC Hall of Fame member Milton Glaser.

ADC Cube presenters were a who’s-who of top industry leaders, including ADC past-presidents Bob Greenberg, chairman, CEO, global CCO at R/GA, Paul Lavoie, chairman, TAXI and Bill Oberlander, EVP, CCO-New York, Cossette Communications, as well as ADC past-presidents and ADC Hall of Fame laureates George Lois and Richard Wilde, chair, BFA Advertising and Graphic Design Department, School of Visual Arts and founding partner, Wilde Design.

The evening kicked off with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in the theater’s impressive lobby, followed by an awards presentation using a lively and engaging new format. ADC Gold Cube winners were asked in advance to create and submit their own 30-second acceptance videos in which they were given free rein to be creative in how they thanked their teams and expressed their views on the challenges of creating winning work. In lieu of having people come up on stage to accept each award, the widely varied and entertaining video acceptances were screened as each ADC Gold Cube winner was announced.

G2, a top-five global activation marketing agency, has announced that G2 USA was honored with Silver and Bronze Summit Creative Awards at this year’s Summit International Awards competition on April 30, 2010. The award was given for G2 USA’s work on the Time Warner Cable Business Class (TWCBC) blueCIRCLE campaign.

Sponsored by the Summit International Awards, the Summit Creative Awards recognize and celebrate accomplishments of small- and medium-sized advertising agencies and other creative companies throughout the world. Submissions are evaluated based on the strength of the idea, the quality of execution, and the ability to communicate and persuade the target audience.

The G2 USA relationship marketing team garnered Silver and Bronze awards in the “B2B Product Website” and “B2B Direct Marketing” categories for their work on the TWCBC blueCIRCLE microsite and direct marketing campaign, respectively. The campaign was a continuation of the 2008 multi-tenant unit (MTU) campaign that targeted tenants of “lit” buildings.

TWCBC currently grows its serviceable footprint and revenues by directly running its fiber optic and coaxial broadband services to commercial customers located in MTU buildings. Customers can leverage TWCBC’s wholly owned network for access to their diverse product portfolio of Internet, phone, cable TV and ethernet services. Once a business in an MTU building becomes a TWCBC customer and has these services provisioned, the building is then considered “on-net” or “lit.” This enables other potential customers within that building to enjoy the benefits of TWCBC technology—customer cost savings and faster installation of TWCBC services.
